Salmonella on Pet Turtles

FDA has recently issued a warning against the sale of pet turtles, specifically those with shells smaller than four inches long. This warning was issued because of the recent death of a four week old baby in Florida, which was found to be due to Salmonella found on the feces of the pet turtle.

Salmonella bacteria may be contracted thru the feces of an infected pet, such as the turtle. Although the pet may appear healthy it may be a carrier of the bacteria. Children, elderly and those with low immune system are particularly at risk since they may have serious complication from the Salmonella bacteria.

Aside from the warning against turtles as pet, it was also advised that hands should be washed thoroughly after handing of any pets.
