High Blood Pressure and Sleep Disordered Breathing

At the University of Texas in Houston, if a child had high blood pressure, they are screened now for Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB).

The signs of SDB are: snoring, enlarged tonsils, obesity, and night time hypertension. The symptoms of SDB are excessive daytime sleepiness and in young children hyperactivity.

The test used to detect SDB is a sleep study called polysomnography.

For children with abnormal sleep study who has big tonsils and adenoids, removal of these tissues results to return to normal blood pressure and reduction of snoring and symptoms of SDB.
