In a conference of ENT specialists in Chicago, it was concluded that that children with OSAS (Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome) may benefit from T & A or removal of the tonsils and adenoids.
The study was reported by Dr. Ron Mitchell, a pediatric laryngologist at Virginia commonwealth University in Richmond.
Some of the signs of OSAS are: snoring, trouble breathing at night, restless sleep, poor school performance, sleepiness at school, and hyperactivity.
Children with snoring should be evaluated for OSAS. One test that might help in the decision to do T & A is Sleep study (Polysomnography). This test can be requested by any primary care physician or ENT specialist. The test cost more than one thousand dollars.
