Acne - 0.1 % gel containing adapalene (Differin, Galderma). Oral antobiotic and tazarotene (Tozarac, Allergan) nightly and 100 mg of minocylcine for up to 12 weeks.
Minocycline (Dynacin, Minocin) -- Treats infections caused by susceptible gram-negative and gram-positive organisms, in addition to infections caused by susceptible chlamydial, rickettsial, and mycoplasmal organisms. Available in 50-, 75-, and 100-mg preparations. 50 - 100 mg BID. Side effects: Photosensitivity. Nail discoloration. Headache.
Ciprofloxin has pediatric indication from 1 to 17 years old. It is indicated for second-line therapy for chronic UTI and pyelonephritis due to E coli.
It has broad activity against many gram-negative, gram-positive and atypical bacterias. The fluoroquinolones are active agains most Enterobacteriaceae.
Cipro is active against Pseudomonas aeuginosa, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella cat. Strep pneumoniae including penicillin-non susceptible strain. It is also active in trachomatis, Mycoplasma pneumomiae, Chlamydia, and Legionella pneumophilia.
Herpes simplex - 2 to 14 days incubabtion period. Skin to skin transmission. Cohen said that patients who are healthy, acyclvir is active against Herpes simplex. Dose: 200 mg 5 times daily.
Psoriasis - liquor carbonis detergens is very effective. It can be combined with steroid cream or or ointment. Salicylic acid can be used also in cream or oil base.
Scabies - it can be treated with 5% permethrin cream.
Tinea - Terbinafine is an anti-fungal allylamine. It is very successful in T. tonsurans. (Dr. Krafchik)
Tinea corporis may use clotrimazole or terginafine. Avoid steroids.
Tinea Versicolor - Selenium sulfide (Selsun Blue, Exsel, Head & Shoulders) - Available as shampoo or lotion in 1% or 2.5% concentrations. It is a safe and effective therapy that has been used for years. The principle advantages of selenium sulfide are its low cost, over-the-counter availability, and convenient application. However, it is an irritant, and some patients complain of itching or eczema after overnight applications. It also may stain clothes and bedding. Lotion is preferred in children and patients with sensitive skin
