A 7 year old boy was at your office because of swollen scrotum. The swelling was noticed about 36 hours before the visit. He has been well before and there was no injury. There was no fever, vomiting, nausea, bloody urine, or pain on urination.
The vital signs including oxygen saturation were all normal. The physical examination was normal except for the swollen scrotum which was diffusely edematous over the left side. There was no pain at the scrotum when touched or palpated.
Here are some of the causes of swollen scrotum:
Testicular torsion
Torsion of the appendix testis
Orchitis
Epididymitis
Incarcerated hernia
Henoch-Schonlein purpura
Scrotal trauma
Varicocele
Hydrocele
Testicular tumor
Acute idiopathic scrotal edema
Leukemic infiltration or metastases
