Yesterday I saw an eight year old girl because of "frequent urination." Her mother said that her daughter has been frequently sick with colds in the past few months. The colds were not bad enough to bring her to a physician. In the past few weeks, she noticed that her child is going to the bathroom more often and that she is also drinking frequently.
She did not have any fever, vomiting, diarrhea, belly pain, headache, or other symptoms. The mother noticed that her child has lost weight. She was healthy before.
On physical examination she looks that she has lost weight. Her facial bones were prominent and her finger looks thin. There was a 7 pounds weight lost from her last visit in January. Her physical examination and vital signs were all normal except for the weight lost.
Because of her "frequent urination and drinking" I sent her to the laboratory for blood sugar and other blood tests.
About an hour later, a laboratory technologist called me in my cell phone to report the her blood sugar was 944 mg. This is extremely high. There normal is between 80 to 120 mg.
I admitted her to the hospital for Insulin treatment and diabetic education.
