A New Teenage High Risk Behavior?
Our country is the only country with the following unique stats: A teenager attempts suicide every 87 seconds, commits suicide every 90 minutes, dies in an accident every 20 minutes, and is murdered every 90 minutes.
A new list might be included in high risk teen behavior called “Suffocation Roulette.” This case was reported at the “Annals of Emergency Medicine, February 2003 page 224.
A 12 year old boy was seen at an Emergency room (Tel Aviv, Israel) because of an episode of unconsciousness that lasted approximately 4 minutes.
He was admitted to the hospital. After the usual investigations, ECG, CT, and consultation with neurologist and cardiologist, a non-organic cause came to light.
He described a game in which 1 player takes a deep breath and holds it while another participant hugs him strongly from behind until “I” feel dizzy and pass out.
Teens with their new technology at their disposal, their cell phones and the e mails, are probably “talking” about this new and upcoming “Suffocation Roulette.” Cool.
Both parents and physicians should be aware of this new phenomenon.
