Screening questions to know if a child is autistic, has a serious behavioral problem, or hearing difficulty. Most normal children under 18 to 24 months old could do the following.
1. Can your child use her or his index finger to point to ask for something, or to indicate interest in an object?
2. Can your child appropriately play with small toys (cars, trucks, blocks, et) without mouthing or dropping?
3. Can your child bring objects to you to show something?
4. Can your child do pretend play?
5. Does you child show interest in other children?
What to observe during the examination:
- Observe during the examination if the child can make eye contact with you.
- Get the child’s interest and point across the room and comment: “Oh look! There’s a car (or name of toy).
- Ask “Where is the light?”
- Can the child stock a tower of blocks?
If a child could not do most of the above requests, the possibility of serious behavioral or emotional problems, or hearing difficulty should be considered. A consultation with a primary care physician or behavioral specialist is needed.
