Questions your Clinician should Ask

When did the runny nose start? Is it less than one week, longer than 10 days, or longer than a month?

Did the runny nose start since the child was in the day care or preschool?

Is the runny nose associated with changes in season.

Are there smokers in the house or car? Are there pets?

Is the basement dump? Is there carpeting in the bedroom or house?

Does the child resides in an industrial area?

What medications has been tried? Did it get better on antibiotics before? What medications or procedures worked before?

Is the child happy otherwise in spite of the runny nose? Who is bothered by the runny nose: the parent, day-care, or school personnel?

Can the child breath through the nose with closed mouth?

Is there fever, headache, or facial pain with the runny nose?  Is there bad breath?

Is there night cough or persistent day time cough?

Have you seen your child put things is the nose?

With these series of questions, your clinician should be able to figure out the most likely cause of your child’s chronic runny nose.
