brilliantbaby.com the website that can help you have a happy, smarter child.

Colic is a very common problem in babies from 2 to 12 weeks old. Most babies with colic gets better with or without treatment by around four months old. Babies with colic are treated with formula change or medications to reduce acid in the stomach and esophagus. The cause of colic is believed to be acid in the esophagus or allergy/intolerance to baby formulas.

An extremely rare cause of colic happened to a baby in Pennsylvania.

A 12 week old boy was seen at an Emergency room because of difficulty of breathing. At three weeks old, he was diagnosed to have colic based on crying after feeding. He was given medications to help the colic but it did not relieved the crying episodes.

At the emergency room, the he was found to have retraction of the lower ribs,  wheezing in both lungs, and enlarged liver. He was put in the hospital and he improved on albuterol. However, after each feeding he would cry for about half an hour.

A chest X-ray was done and it showed an enlarged heart and fluid in the lungs (pulmonary edema). An ECG (electrocardiogram) was abnormal.

This baby was fortunate to be at a Teaching Hospital in Philadelphia. He survived.
