Abdomen. The abdomen should not be distended and it should be soft. A clinician feels the belly for an enlarged spleen, liver, kidney, and mass (enlarged tissue). During infancy the common abnormality found in the belly is umbilical hernia or protrusion of the navel. If there is an enlarged organ, a clinician can feel it easily. A finding of an enlarged organ will prompt a clinician to request for a sonogram or CT of the belly. An enlarged kidney is a common organ that is enlarged.
The fontanel or soft spot. The soft spot is usually open by 12 months old. Sometimes it is closed by 6 months old and still be normal if the head size is growing normally and the sutures of the skull are not bumpy or prominent. The earlier the fontanel closes the sooner a clinician will request for an X ray or CT of the Skull. They will look for craniosynostosis or early closure of the sutures. Early closure of the sutures, if not corrected, may result to failure of the brain to expand and might lead to mental retardation.
