Kawasaki Disease is one of the serious causes of prolonged fever in children. Any child with high fever longer than 5 days who is irritable should be suspected with Kawasaki Disease (KD). This is a serious condition because of its possible complications: coronary artery dilatation.
The other features of KD are: rashes at face, diaper area, around the anus, red eye (conjunctiva), strawberry tongue, enlarged lymph nodes at the neck, swollen fingers, toes and hands, high ESR.
The diagnosis is Clinical plus echocardiogram. The echocardiogram will show dilatation of the coronary arteries.
High dose intravenous gamma globulin and aspirin are the treatment of choice. Intravenous steroids are being considered in more serious cases of KD.
The cause of KD is not yet known.
