The Internet and Asthma Education
Children with asthma who use an interactive, multimedia education program in addition to traditional patient education can better manage their condition, according to the study, "Internet-Enabled Interactive Multimedia Asthma Education Program: A Randomized Trial." The study compared children who received conventional asthma education, including verbal and written information, with those who also used the Interactive Multimedia Program for Asthma Control and Tracking (IMPACT) during routine visits to a pediatric pulmonary clinic. Over the course of a year, the group of children using the interactive program had fewer symptom days (51 compared to 81 for the control group), fewer emergency department visits (.62 compared to 1.93), and lower average daily doses of inhaled corticosteroids (434 micrograms compared to 754). Using such a program can significantly reduce the burden of childhood asthma for patients and the healthcare system.
