POEM (Parent Oriented Evidence Medicine)
Asthma is the most common chronic disease in children. House dust mite (HDM) is the most common trigger of asthma. It makes sense that reducing the amount of house dust should help many asthmatic children.
A randomized controlled trial of on the effect of mattress and pillow encasing on children with asthma and house dust mite allergy has been done on 60 children (6 to 15 years old). A group of control using placebo encasings was used in the study.
The researchers from Copenhagen, Denmark concluded that: Encasing of mattresses and pillows resulted in significant long-term reduction in HDM allergen concentrations in mattresses and in the need for inhaled steroids in children with asthma and HDM allergy.

Comment: All children with asthma, allergy, and eczema would benefit from this research findings. Parents should encase the pillows and mattresses with hypoallergenic covers. This move is cost-effective.
