Hives or urticaria are easily recognized by most laymen. About 15% of the population might experience hives at one time or another. Acute hives last shorter than 6 weeks; chronic hives longer than 6 weeks. In most instances, it is difficult to pin point the cause of hives. Antihistamines usually help reduce the itching.
