Hives In Children

Leo Leonidas MD, FAAP

**

Hives or urticaria are easily recognized by most laymen. About 15% of the population might experience hives at one time or another. Acute hives last shorter than 6 weeks; chronic hives longer than 6 weeks. In most instances, it is difficult to pin point the cause of hives. Antihistamines usually help reduce the itching.

The following are the causes of Hives:

MEDICATIONS (Penicillins, Sulfas, Sedatives, Aspirin, Analgesics, etc)

FOODS (Nuts, Fish, Eggs, Milk, Strawberries, Lobster, Citric Acid, etc)

INHALANTS (Pollens, Mold spores, Animal danders, Plants, Aerosols)

INFECTIONS (Strep, Infectious Mono, Coxsackie, Adenovirus)

PARASITES (Giardiasis, Roundworms, Trichinosis)

INSECTS & ARTHROPOD BITES & STINGS (Bees, Wasps, Fleas, Mites, Bedbugs, Mosquitoes, Scorpions, Spiders, and jellyfish)

PENETRANTS & CONTACTANTS (Textiles, Animal Danders, Plants, Cosmetics)

SYSTEMIC DISEASES (JRA, SLE, Henoch-Schonlein, Urticaria Pigmentosa, Tumors)

PSYCHOGENIC URTICARIA (Stress, Psychological disturbances)

GENETIC DISORDERS (Hereditary Angioneurotic Edema, Familial Cold Urticaria, Familial Heat Urticaria, Vibratory Angioedema, Heredofamilial Syndrome of Urticaria with deafness and Amyloidosis, and Erythropoietic Protoporphyria)
