Fever in infants younger than 3 months old should not be taken lightly. The incidence of serious bacterial infection in babies younger than one month is about 13%. In babies between 1 to 2 months it is about 10%.
In a study of 200 infants younger than 3 months old done at Christus Santa Rosa Children’s Hospital at San Antonio, Texas, the researchers concluded that “Rectal thermometry must remain the standard for infants younger than 3 months of age.”
In this study, Welch Allyn Sure Temp rectal thermometer was used.
Fever was defined as a rectal temperature of 100.4 F or greater.
