Face Recognition

By two months old, the cerebral cortex begins to take over the control of facial recognition from the subcortical visual areas.  By this time, a baby starts to notice the unique nose, eyes, lips, and mouth of their mother or father.

She can now recognize and concentrate on stationary face because of improvement in acuity, binocularity, and color vision. At two months old, face recognition shifts to the temporal lobe. Recently, brain scanning experiments have shown that the temporal cortex becomes electronically active when a two month old baby looks at a face.

This is the time also that some babies would stare for an extended time at a bright object like a lamp or mother face that can make a mother's hear melt.  This is called the obligatory look which is a result of the competing control between the temporal lobe and the subcortical visual areas. Many parents remember this as the time they really fall in love with their baby.
