Pretend you are the parent of the 6 year old boy. This is your first visit with this physician.
Doctor: What seem to be the problem with your child?
Parent: He has been coughing for a long time.

Parent: Oh, about 3 weeks now.

Parent: No fever doctor.
Doctor: Is he coughing more after running, playing, or laughing? (Click here for explanation.)
Parent: Oh yes, whenever he plays hard he coughs and sometimes he has trouble breathing.
Doctor: In the past, did he had any bronchitis or pneumonia? (Click here for explanation)
Parent: Yes, last year he was seen at the ER for bronchitis and he was given an antibiotic.
Doctor: Do you have asthma, hay fever, or eczema in your close family members? (Click here...)
Parent: Yes, my brother and sister had bronchial asthma when they were young. And some of their children are taking an inhaler.
Doctor: Is there a smoker in your family? (Click here ...)
Parents: My husband smokes, but he always smoke outside.
Doctor: When he had bronchitis last year, was it after visiting some of your relatives or friends with smokers in the house?
Parent: Oh, yes, it was soon after a Thanksgiving when we were at my parents for the holidays. And their granfather smokes inside the house.
Doctor: I think you child has mild asthma. (Click here ...)
