Henry
Hi Dr. Leonidas,
I am responding to your recent e-mail regarding how our child is progressing in math. The answer: Very well!! He is 21 ½ months old and can count from 1 to 10 both forwards and backwards (says the numbers in progression), although he appears to only be able to count actual objects from 1 to 5. Whenever we are cooking and cut anything with a knife he says "half" and sometimes "quarter". He tells me how many of certain objects are in his books, such as "two cows", "three pigs". Mind you, he isn't necessarily consistent, but has done each of these things several times.
Otherwise, he knows square, diamond, triangle and circle. He has started to recite passages from his books as I am reading them. He understands up/down, in/out, big/little, and other opposites. We are working on his colors, which he doesn't seem to be picking up easily (his father is color blind, so he may be also). He understands a computer mouse moves the cursor on the computer screen and can (in one of his computer games "Reader Rabbit") bring a key with a letter on it to a door with the same letter on it, where there are three doors with different letters to choose from.
Thanks for you interest.
