You might not
realize it but your toddler is learning the concept of math this early.
Watch her play with Lego blocks or several toys. You will see that she can
do ordering, sequencing, categorization, and sorting. When she get all
red Lego blocks on one side and all blue blocks on the other side, she is
demonstrating the concept of sorting. When she separates the dolls from
the cars, she is telling you that she can categorize objects. And when she
arranged four small cubes into a bigger square, she knows the concept of
shape. Of course, it is easy to detect that she knows early math if you
hear her count, “One, two, three, four, five.”
To further extend
your child’s math ability, you should expose her to math concepts every
opportunity you can get. Suppose you are in your kitchen and doing the
dishes. Show her three teaspoons and count it slowly with enthusiasm
before you put it the sink. Get three apples and show it to her and say,
“Three apples.” Then put each apple in front of her and count it
individually. Then request her, “Give one apple to momma.”
If you just become
conscious to include math concepts in your daily life with your toddler,
she will learn it without difficulty in another year or two. Just make
sure you make everything a play and fun for both of you.
