Commonly Done Tests and Imaging CBC (Complete Blood Count) CBC is the most commonly test done both in children and adults. "Complete" his a misnomer. This blood test will not tell the blood sugar in the blood or other chemistries. CBC will tell the clin1cian about the White and Red Blood cells, platelets, and hemoglobin and hematocrit. The total White Blood Cell (WBC) count and help in determining the probability of bacterial infection or inflammation. If the WBC is above 15,000 there is a higher chance of bacterial infection or inflammation, such as appendicitis. If the WBC is low it is generally attributed to a viral infection. However, a high WBC can be from a viral infection also. Sometimes a very high WBC is a sign of Leukemia if the hemoglobin and platelet counts are both abnormally low. A very low platelet count can result to bleeding problem found in ITP (Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura). In leukemia the platelet count can be low also. Hemoglobin and hematocrit is the part of the CBC that can tell if the patient is anemic. | go to top | parent's medical school | archives |
